Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale (Japanese: 劇場版 ソードアート・オンライン -オーディナル・スケール-, Hepburn: Gekijō-ban Sōdo Āto Onrain -Ōdinaru Sukēru- ) is a 2017 Japanese animated science fiction activity chance film based on the Sword Art Online low-cal novel serial written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. Plot [edit]

Asuna, Lisbeth and Silica encourage Kirito to play OS upon hearing that Aincrad bosses have appeared. Kirito joins Asuna and Klein in a boss fight against Kagachi the Samurai Lord at Akihabara, where the game's mascot, AI idol vocaliser Yuna, appears and gives players buff effects as she sings. Kirito fails to achieve anything due to lack of existent world physical forcefulness and agility. Eiji, the number-ii ranked player, aids the group in defeating the boss. Before Asuna makes the killing blow, Eiji whispers the word "Switch," a game mechanic from SAO that she recognizes.

The next nighttime, Asuna joins Klein and his group for another boss fight at Yoyogi Park while waiting for their terminal group fellow member, unaware that he was injured by Eiji the night before. Asuna leaves Klein and his gild behind and proceeds to the fight against the Tempest Griffin, which is again presided over by Yuna. Klein and his guild are surprised by the sudden appearance of a second boss, Zanghi the Flame Caller, and shockingly supported past Eiji, who physically attacks and defeats Klein and his entire order in the real globe using superior reflexes and seemingly superhuman force. When Asuna returns to where she left them, Klein and his social club are nowhere to exist seen. The following morning, equally Kirito practices with OS in Yoyogi Park, a girl he doesn't know appears in a white hood, mouths something wordlessly and points off into the distance before disappearing. A confused Kirito is surprised past Asuna who has arrived to have lunch with him. While eating together, Asuna theorizes that Eiji was a former fellow member of the Knights of the Blood Oath named Nautilus, while Yui deduces that the spawn locations of the Aincrad bosses line up with the SAO dungeon maps. Noting the absence of Klein, Kirito tries to check upwardly on him.

Asuna, Lisbeth and Silica bring together the boss fight against Strict Hermit at Yebisu Garden Identify, where Yuna and Eiji appear again. At the same time, Agil contacts Kirito and tells him that Klein has been hospitalized with a broken arm; Kirito, alarmed, rushes to protect Asuna and their friends. During the boss battle, a second boss, Dorz'50 the Chaos Drake, suddenly appears and fixates on Silica. Eiji blocks Silica's escape by pushing her into the path of a lethal boss set on, and Asuna is defeated while protecting her; an orange orb materializes from Asuna and is apace collected by one of the OS drones. After the battle, Asuna begins to suffer memory loss, and goes to the hospital for test.

Asuna learns that the Augma device scanned her encephalon specifically for SAO memories and that the retention loss could worsen. Later on Asuna's status worsens, Kirito gains a strong resolve to solve the mystery. Kirito visits Klein in the hospital and confirms that Klein's SAO memories are too missing. Kirito goes to the Dire Tusk boss boxing at Tokyo Dome City looking for Eiji, where he is joined past Sinon; although he is concerned for her condom, Sinon reminds Kirito that she is not an SAO survivor. During the boss boxing, an SAO survivor is defeated and Kirito witnesses a glowing retentivity orb being nerveless by an Bone drone. Yui tries to retrieve the memory orb from the drone but fails afterwards being blocked by the OS system. After the boxing, Kirito is frustrated that Eiji did not show up, but meets the hooded daughter a tertiary time, who repeats her actions from earlier. Kirito and Yui effigy out that she is pointing towards Touto Technical University.

Kirito goes to the university and meets Professor Tetsuhiro Shigemura, who developed Augma. Shigemura refuses to answer whatsoever questions. Before leaving, Kirito notices on Shigemura's desk-bound a picture show of a girl who resembles Yuna. Kirito talks to Seijirō Kikuoka, who informs him that Shigemura'due south daughter, Yuna, died in SAO. Kirito warns Kikuoka that the retentivity loss may be affecting other SAO survivors playing Os. Visiting Asuna's dwelling, Kirito promises Asuna that he will become her memories back. While searching for clues, Kirito encounters the hooded girl notwithstanding once again, who he confirms is Yuna. Before diving, Kirito gives Asuna an date ring. Entering the Cherry-red Palace of Floor 100, Kirito, Lisbeth, Silica, Agil, and Sinon confront the dominate. They are easily overwhelmed until Asuna, Leafa, Klein, and several other memorable players from ALO and GGO come to their aid. Yui restores their saved abilities from SAO, assuasive everyone to defeat the boss. The vocalisation of Akihiko Kayaba congratulates them on their victory and gives Kirito an extremely powerful sword as a reward.

The group returns to the arena nevertheless in full-dive where Kirito, now Os's pinnacle-ranked histrion, effortlessly dispatches the bosses with his new sword. Meanwhile, in the real world, Kikuoka finds Shigemura in the abased server room of Argus (the defunct visitor that once ran SAO) and arrests him. The hooded Yuna restores the survivors' memories and fades out of existence since her existence was tied to that of the Flooring 100 boss. Afterwards, Kirito and Asuna fulfill the promise they made to each other in Aincrad, to watch a meteor shower together. Asuna returns Kirito's promise ring and so he can properly put information technology on her hand this time, which he does.

In a post-credits scene, Kikuoka, who was impressed with Shigemura's endeavor at AI and soul reconstruction, recruits Shigemura to Rath.

At the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2015 on Oct 4, 2015, it was announced that the light novel series would be adapted into an animated film, with the chief staff returning from the anime series.[nine] [10] The movie takes place afterwards the anime series' 2nd flavour, Sword Fine art Online II.[11] It was then revealed at the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event on March thirteen, 2016 that the movie is titled Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale.[12] The voice cast from the anime series returned to reprise their roles in the movie.[seven] [13] [xiv]

The Asian premieres were distributed by Aniplex and Odex, respectively.[17] [18] [nineteen] There was a premiere effect in the United States on March 1, 2017; Eleven Arts and Sony Pictures distributed and released the picture show in U.Due south. theaters on March 9, 2017.[20] Madman Entertainment also released the film at theaters in Australia and New Zealand on March 9, 2017.[21] Aniplex of America released the film at theaters in Canada betwixt March 17 and March nineteen, 2017.[22] The English dub premiered at Anime Boston 2017, Sony Pictures made its national release on April 22.[23] [24] Anime Limited brought the film to cinemas in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and Ireland on April 19, 2017.[25] [26] The film was prepare to play in about 1,000 theaters worldwide.[27]

The film on its opening weekend opened at No. 1 at the Japanese box office, debuting in 151 theaters beyond Nihon and grossed ¥425 meg from 308,376 admissions.[32] [33] It went on to gross a full of ¥2.52 billion ($22,466,673) in Nippon by the end of 2017.[34]

In China, the film has grossed CN¥53.95 million.[35] It grossed over $1.35 meg in its first weekend in North America,[36] and went on to gross $one,522,976 in the United States and Canada.[37] During its offset day in Italy, the film beat out out both Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Wonder Woman at the box office.[38]

By Oct 1, 2017, the pic had grossed a total of over ¥4.iii billion ($38.3 meg) worldwide.[3] After October 5, 2017, the flick grossed a further $41,652 in China,[39] and $14,702 in Argentina,[40] for a worldwide total of $38,256,354.

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 100% of critics have given the moving picture a positive review based on v reviews, with an average rating of seven.62/10.[41] Alex Osborn of IGN posted a score of 7.5/10 and stated: "It's not a visual stunner, simply Ordinal Calibration serves up a solid original story that will help tide over those who are hungry for more SAO while they wait for a tertiary season". A review coming from Cine Premier's Julio Vélez who scored information technology a 4/5 and stated: "The second act falls a little in action by focusing more than on defining the motives of the antagonists, but everything recovers in an exciting and prolonged climax".[42] [43] In a review featured on the anime streaming website Crunchyroll, Isaac Akers states "SAO being SAO, this was never going to be a perfectly crafted movie—but it captures so many of the charms of the franchise whilst too avoiding nearly all of its most aggravating faults."[44]

Yuna makes her beginning video game appearance in Accel World VS. Sword Fine art Online equally a DLC playable character. She later makes her 2nd DLC advent in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet aslope game original character Seven and Eiji, the latter making his video game debut in Fatal Bullet.
